1. Paris Johnson Jr. – Ohio State
6’6″ 313 lbs.
This years draft class contains a group of lineman that are great but not excellent. The top of the list starts with Paris Johnson Jr, who only played left tackle for one season, and that being in 2022. As a former right guard, he knows how to utilize his frame and maintain a strong pad level. One of the bigger tackles in this class measuring up at 6’6”, Johnson shows good explosiveness in his pass sets. In the run game, he has exceptional range as a run blocker with the help of his long limbs. He shows a good mix of size, athleticism, and intelligence to help him dominate his opponent. Johnson has quick feet, and does a good job of utilizing his leverage and length against defenders in the passing game. There is a possibility of growing pains at the next level due to one year playing left tackle. Johnson could also fill out his frame with more lower body strength which would add a more concrete base. You would also like to see him be more disciplined with his hands, which seems to stem from his time playing guard. Overall Paris Johnson Jr has the intangibles to be an elite tackle in the NFL, he should be the first tackle off the board within the first 10 picks of the 2023 NFL draft.
2. Peter Skoronski – Northwestern
6’4″ 313 lbs.
With 3 years playing left tackle for Northwestern, Peter Skoronski is one of the more experienced at the position in this years draft. He has very good hands, and is able to adapt to both speed rushes and inside moves on the fly. Despite his smaller size, he plays with a firm base which in turn negates him from being pushed around like you think he would. He’s a strong mover in the run game and climbs to the second level well. The first of his many question marks is his explosiveness out of his pass set. Probably his biggest area of concern? His arm length. Pair his 32 1/4” arms and his lack of explosiveness, he really struggled against edge rushers that were able to bend and maintain good speed. He does make up for his lack of lank and size with intelligence and adaptability. Many analysts believe that Skoronski’s future in the NFL is at the guard position. Teams could be hesitant on his ability to play left tackle, which could lead to his draft stock falling. Skoronski should be one of the first lineman off of the board in 2023.
3. Broderick Jones – Georgia
6’5″ 311 lbs.
Broderick Jones is extremely athletic prospect, a 2 sport athlete at Ohio State, and being clocked in at 19mph on the GPS tracker. There is lots to like about his game, especially in the run game where he attacks defenders with his speed and finishes the play with a pancake. He shows good agility for someone that big and makes sure to keep his base low so he doesn’t get forklifted. Jones shows off his intelligence as he utilizes a variety of angles when pass protecting, and adjusts well to twists and stunts thrown his way. Jones possesses extremely strong hands, he locks onto defenders and keeps them there with his grip strength. With only 19 career starts at the left tackle position, it leads to some inconsistent play due to his overaggressiveness. His technique could see some improvement, as he has shown that he is more of a mauler. Jones needs some polishing, but should be a day 1 starter for a team looking for a left tackle in the draft. He’s a phenomenal athlete that could benefit from some fine tuning in order to take that next step in the NFL. Broderick Jones is expected to go before 15th overall. And if he slips that far to the Jets, Aaron Rodgers has his newest blind side blocker.
4. Anton Harrison – Oklahoma
6’4″ 315 lbs.
Unlike other prospects, Anton Harrison had been starting at the tackle position since his true freshman year. Possessing good strength, a wide frame, excellent athleticism, and good length, Harrison has all the intangibles you look for in a franchise tackle. With fast moving feet in the open space, he closes the gap quickly between him and defenders in the run game. He has good power and control in pass protection, with lots of reps at the position he adjusts well to the defender lined up opposite of him. Harrison has the ability to freeze defenders in their tracks with his long arms, and maintains his position well because of his experience. He doesn’t have the strongest hands, which in turn leads to lost reps against bigger stronger lineman. Another way that Harrison gets beaten is the fact that he plays a little too tall, and gets burnt inside. While in pass protection, he gets so much depth that he gives up too much real estate on his inside hip, setting himself up to get turned inside. Unfortunately, Harrison needs a little bit of development despite his experience at the position, and could fall to late day 1, or early day 2.
5. Dawand Jones – Ohio state
6’8″ 374 lbs.
Dawand Jones is a freakishly big man, listed at 6’8” with arms that should be on a 7-footer, he is the definition of a monster. To go along with his abnormal size, Jones has played the right tackle position at a high level, being a 2 year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He is extremely physical and aggressive in the run game, and the best part about him attacking in open space is the fact that he doesn’t over commit. Jones wins every rep if he can get his hands on you thanks to his length and hand strength. Unfortunately for Jones, with as much upside and physical traits he possesses, he also has a lot of flaws in his game. Jones has quick feet for a guy that is almost 7 feet tall, but compared to his opposition he tends to be slower out of his break. His lower body is too high and too slow, leading to difficult reps against speed rushers. Jones relies too much on his length and athleticism, and tends to look stiff in pass protection. Really needs to even out his build as he is a top heavy prospect that lacks lateral quickness. Overall Jones has shown that he can play the position well, and has all the intangibles you look for. But due to his upper body being so much larger and developed than the legs underneath him, Jones could really struggle at the next level without there right development. Dawand Jones is a monstrous man that should hear his name called sometime early on day 2 of the NFL draft.
